Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As you will be aware, the situation with COVID-19 is constantly changing and it could affect our ability to deliver services in the coming weeks and months.

To ensure the safety of our customers and staff the way we operate will look very different to the service you were used to before lockdown. The principles of social distancing guidelines and safety are at the forefront of how services will operate moving forwards.

Deep cleaning has been undertaken and regular cleaning of all touchpoints will be carried out throughout the day.

Toilets will not be available at any of our sites in the initial phase of re-opening.

Libraries

Libraries will reopen on Monday, 6 July, 2020.

Please note, in this initial phase of opening, for customer and staff safety, we will be operating an order and collect service only. You will only be able to drop off borrowed items and collect pre-ordered items at the door - there is no provision to browse books or drop in.

Customers can order items from Monday, 6 July, using the online catalogue, the library app or by phoning their branch. Please note that we are currently unable to notify via email or text when items are ready to collect, but your online account will show when items are available at your branch so we recommend logging in to check the status of your order.

The thousands of stock items that were on shelf at the point of lockdown have also all been cleaned by site staff.

Customers returning items will place them directly into a special sack and books will be quarantined for 72hours before being cleaned and reshelved by staff.

Overdue fines have not been applied during the lockdown period and the number of items customers can borrow has been increased

Browsing will be gradually reintroduced in later phases in line with safety guidance.

Newspapers will not be available.

When the public access PCs are made available again, this will be by appointment and for essential needs only.

Customers will need to bring their library card to get access to a PC. Availability will be restricted to ensure adequate distancing between users. Cleaning materials will be provided in IT suites

  • Please book a PC in advance (once available) and observe the time allocation to ensure all customers with a booking can get access on time

Mobile Libraries

The thousands of stock items that were on shelf at the point of lockdown have also all been cleaned by our staff.

In the first phase it will only be possible to borrow items by an order and collect service. To help comply with social distancing guidelines, customers will not be able to board the library vehicle or use the public access PC

Mobile Library customers will be contacted from Monday, 6 July, by text, email or telephone to discuss the new opening hours and the order and collect service.

Once books have been ordered, staff will contact the customer and arrange a collection appointment. If customers arrive outside of the allotted time, books many not be ready for collection.

Customers returning items will be asked to place them directly into a marked box and books will be quarantined for 72 hours before being cleaned and made available for the next customer.

Overdue fines have not been applied during the lockdown period and loan limits have been extended

We will initially reopen the mobile library service with 2 weekly deliveries at our busiest stops and during our normal hours. Customers will be contacted by text, email or telephone to discuss the new opening hours and our order and collect service.

Museums

Beverley Guildhall, the Treasure House and Goole Museum will re-open, based on their normal opening hours/days from Monday, 6 July, 2020. Skidby Mill will re-open later in July after refurbishment works are complete.

In the first phase it will only be possible to visit the site by following a prescribed route which has been designed to ensure appropriate social distancing. We will also need to limit the number of people in the building at any one time.

We have removed leaflet display units, children's toys, interactives and seating in order to maximise space for social distancing

These changes are in place to enable us to reopen safely and in-line with government advice and regulations, and are for the benefit of keeping our customers and staff as safe as possible. These are subject to change according to the latest government advice.

Archives

East Riding Archives Service based at the Treasure House in Beverley will reopen on Monday, 6 July, 2020.

In the first phase it will only be possible to consult documents or use an archives computer by appointment. Customers who would like to deposit or donate records also need to contact us to make an appointment before bringing in the records.

Staff will be answering research enquiries by email or the telephone to enable more enquiries to be dealt with in the safest way possible and minimising face to face contact by reducing the need for customers to visit a site.

Enquiry desk availability will be restricted to ensure adequate distancing between customers. Cleaning materials will be provided at enquiry desks in use

Treasure House

As of Monday, 6 July, 2020 we will be open as normal, with individual details for the Archives, Museum and Gallery and Library services within the building as listed above.

A queuing system will operate in order to gain access to the Treasure House.

There will be two queues; one for Library users which will run down the side of the building up to the car park and one for everything else running in front of the building.

Entry to the Treasure House will by the main entry doors, where you will be directed by a staff member.

The Tourist Information Centre will be open as per its normal opening times with a member of staff available to answer any tourism related queries.

The Treasure House cafe will remain closed.

Please note that there will be no self-service leaflet/brochure stands or merchandise available to purchase.

Customer Services

Customer Services will reopen on Monday, 6 July, 2020.

In the first phase it will only be possible to visit the site to talk to a customer advisor by appointment and only for services which cannot be completed via the council website eastriding.gov.uk or by telephone on 01482 393939

We have increased the number of telephone operatives to enable more enquiries to be dealt with in the safest way possible and minimising face to face contact by reducing the need for customers to visit a site - please call 01482 393939 for assistance.

Caddy liners will be available to pick up near the entrance to the centre

Countryside Access

Our public rights of way and Local Nature Reserves remain open to use for daily exercise purposes - however, planned countryside events are not currently taking place until 1 September, subject to further advice.

Please note: Due to the foreshore road closure and the reduced capacity for parking at the Humber Bridge Board car parks we recommend that visitors do not visit the Foreshore and the Country Park at this time. Other reserves are available and these should be visited instead.

Cycling is also great for fun and fitness, but please do not cycle on public footpaths. Please utilise quieter roads, cycle ways and cycle routes, and public bridleways. Cycling on public footpaths causes safety issues for the increased number of people out walking, spoils their enjoyment and is not permitted by the owners of the land.

Our four disused railway lines in the East Riding offer quieter places to cycle away from cars, and all offer informal or larger car parks.

The East Riding has some great walks. Choose a short walk or something more challenging, but remember to keep two metres away from other people. Plan a walk from home using our Public Rights of Way map to see where there are countryside paths near you. Visit http://walkingtheriding.co.uk/

At all times, follow the Countryside Code which has information for dog walkers and etiquette about gates. Please respect other users and the owners of the land and take your litter home.

Coastal Services

The foreshore and beaches are open and we would like to take this opportunity to remind our users to maintain social distancing and ensure that dogs are kept under control at all times. The dog exclusion zones will be enforced from 4 July so please familiarise yourself with these before bringing your dog to the beach. We also ask dog owners to clean up after their pets, and to dispose of the waste in the bins provided. All this will continue to be monitored by our team, and government instructions will be reinforced where necessary.

The Coastal Services (formerly Foreshores) office in Bridlington reopens on 4 July and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to the chalets. However, the chalets are fully booked for this summer so the Coastal Services team is not taking any new bookings.

Customers with bookings will be contacted in strict chronological order when the receptionist will either take payment for the chalet or offer a refund if either the council or the customer have to cancel the booking. Outstanding refunds will be given as soon as possible. Please be aware that new terms and conditions have been introduced and it is important that customers read these before using the chalets.

The Coastal Services team will monitor compliance with the new terms and conditions of hire for the chalets and public behaviour around the chalets before taking any bookings for winter lets or for 2021. We are hoping to announce a date for these bookings in mid to late July.

Land trains will be running from Saturday, 4 July, but there is a reduced service on the Bridlington North service with the trains running between Limekiln Lane and Sewerby Hall and Gardens only, with no stop at Bondville Model Village. Face coverings must be worn at all times when on the Land trains. There are social distancing measures in place, which means a reduction in capacity on the trains. Customers are requested to make card payments only to reduce the need for cash handling. Customers must fold prams, buggies and wheelchairs before boarding the train. Regretfully, we will not be able to use the wheelchair lift in the rear carriage of the trains this season. There will be a queueing system adjacent to the platform to remove the interaction between passengers getting onto and off the trains.

The paddling pool in Hornsea is closed. Bridlington paddling pool is currently open but users are requested to maintain social distancing in and around the pool.
